Larr hompson City Administrator LT/mh n V AGENDA REQUEST FORM ITEM NO. /06L--- NAME: Ken Kuchera DEPARTMENT: Fire DATE: August 7, 1987 MEETING DATE: August 17, 1987 CATEGORY: Miscellaneous SUBJECT: 1969 Metro Step Van (4797) EXPLANATION: Justification to maintain existing unit for use as explained REFERENCE MATERIALS/RESPONSIBILITY: See copied memo to City Administrator REFERRED TO: (NAME) DEPARTMENT: • SIG ATURE MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL SUBJECT: STATUS OF 1969 INTERNATIONAL STEP VAN DATE: AUGUST 13, 1987 Attached, please find a memo from Fire Chief Ken Kuchera regarding the con- version of the existing fire/rescue truck from a code 3 to a code 1 vehicle. After reviewing the proposal, I would recommend against the action. While the City would be, in effect, obtaining another vehicle at no cost, I have concerns about repairs and maintenance necessary to keep the vehicle in operation. Problems were noted during the deliberations over the new truck. The conversion or retention of vehicles scheduled for replacement was noted as a concern of mine in the CIP report. Larr ompson City Administrator LT/mh cc: Ken Kuchera file August 6, 1987 TO: Larry Thompson, City Administrator FROM: Ken Kuchera, Fire Chief SUBJECT: Future Status of 1969 International Metro Step Van The Fire/Rescue truck committee visited the Custom Fire Manufacturing Facility yesterday evening. Progress on our new unit is moving along rapidly and the committee was very impressed with the quality work- manship. Delivery of the new unit is scheduled for the first week in September. As explained previously, the equipment in the existing unit will be placed in the new unit. Mechanically, our existing unit needs major repair if we are going to maintain it as a Code 3 response (red lights and siren) vehicle. I would estimate the truck if sold, to be worth approximately $1000 .00. As a Code 1 response (no red lights or sirens, no hurry) unit, it could be utilized for a number of func- tions. Salvage and overhaul equipment and supplies could be stored and transported and a compressed air cascade supply system could be mounted and transported. This would allow us to fill our existing Scott Air Pack bottles at the scene rather than transporting to the station and back to the scene. Miscellaneous equipment, which is not used on a routine basis such as rakes, shovels, pitch forks, and brooms could also be stored in the unit. I can also see the unit being useful to transport our Explorer Post personnel if they are needed for assistance. This again would be a routine Code 1 response. This unit would not respond unless needed and requested. I plan on placing this issue on the Council Agenda for further discussion at the August 17 meeting.
