NOTICE OF MEETING
TOPIC:
Proposed Thoroughfare Plan Amendment for the area east of
Akin Road and south of 195th Street.
MEETING:
October 20, 2004, 7:00 P.M., Farmington Maintenance Facility
Dear Sir/Madam,
The Farmington Planning Commission held a public hearing on Tuesday, July 13, 2004
to consider a proposed Thoroughfare Plan Amendment (see attached) for the area
east of Akin Road and south of 195th Street. The Commission continued the public
hearing until Wednesday, September 15, 2004 in order to receive further input from
affected property owners and the City's traffic engineer. At its meeting on September
15, 2004, the Planning Commission recommended approval of a modified version of
the proposed Thoroughfare Plan Amendment.
The City Council reviewed the proposed Thoroughfare Plan Amendment (hereinafter
"the Plan") on October 4, 2004. At that time, several Council members expressed
concerns regarding certain aspects of the Plan. As a result, the adoption of the Plan
was tabled by the Council to provide more time for discussion and public input.
The issues that were raised at the Council meeting on October 4 included the
following:
1. At least one Council member did not believe that 189th Street should be
extended to the east.
2. A resident who lives on Embers Avenue was opposed to the creation of a four-
way intersection at Embers Avenue and 195th Street.

3. The initial draft of the Plan showed a new collector road proceeding east from
the intersection of 198th Street and Akin Road. Based upon public input and
further staff review, this 198th Street extension was deleted from the Plan
before it was presented to the City Council on October 4. Some Council
members have suggested that the 198th Street extension should be re-inserted
into the Plan.
4. Some concerns were expressed regarding the proposed closure of Akin Road
between 208th Street and Devonport Drive. (The closure had been suggested by
City staff to help route more northbound traffic away from Akin Road and onto
the new north/south road east of Akin Road, and to eliminate a potentially
dangerous "y" intersection just north of 208th Street.)
5. Questions were asked about whether the proposed alignment of the new
north/south road east of Akin Road would be affected by existing wetlands.
The preceding issues will be discussed at a joint Council/Planning Commission
meeting on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at 7:00 pm at the City's Maintenance
Facility located south of 195th Street and east of Pilot Knob Road.
