CITY OF Meeting Location: FARMINGTONFarmington City Hall 430 Third Street Farmington, MN 55024 CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION MEETING AGENDA September 6, 2022 5:00 PM 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. APPROVE AGENDA 3. DISCUSSION ITEMS (a) POLICE DEPARTMENTSPACE NEEDS EVALUATION (90 Minutes) 4. CITY ADMINISTRATOR UPDATE S. ADJOURN CITY OF O 430 Third St., Farmington, MN 55024 FARMINGTON © 651-28o-6800 Farmington MN.gov TO: Mayor, Councilmembers and City Administrator FROM: Jim Constantineau, Deputy Chief of Police SUBJECT: POLICE DEPARTMENT SPACE NEEDS EVALUATION (90 Minutes) DATE: September 6, 2022 INTRODUCTION At the city council work session on May 2, 2022, staff was directed to engage Wold Architects and Engineers to conduct a space needs evaluation for the police department to begin determining the need for an expansion. That evaluation is nearing completion and staff, along with Wold, will report their findings to the council. DISCUSSION The current Farmington Police Department building opened in June 2002 and was expected to suit our needs for 20 years. The building has served us well over the years, but we are—and have been for some time—simply out of space. Staff had several meetings with Wold and toured several police departments to observe what trends have developed in the last 20 years. We have developed some options that will serve the needs of the department and community for the next 20 years or more. At the start of the work session,we would like to take a brief tour of the department so council can see first-hand a few of the issues we are facing. We will then speak to some of the shortcomings of the current building as well as the requests we made of Wold for the facility expansion. Staff from Wold will provide an overview of an expansion plan along with the preliminary cost estimate. Finally, staff will provide council with information on the financing side of the project. BUDGET IMPACT There is no current budget impact for this item. ACTION REQUESTED Discuss and review the options for expansion of the police department building and provide staff with appropriate direction.
